Homeless Man

This picture shows a man and his dog (best friend) and they seem to be struggling with the economy. Even though they may not have any money the owner seems to care the same for the dog by feeding him and staying by his side. The feeling I’m getting from this image is love and hope by the way the owner is hugging his dog it is like he is telling him everything is going to be okay. This picture brings an emotional affect too many people that would see it but in fact that’s the reality now in the world. One good thing is that they have each other.

Essay 1 (Family Guy)

Watching television may be an exciting interest for various people. In this generation people can spend most of their day watching television especially children. Children’s vulnerability towards television will affect them in the long run by ideas presented in a negative way. I’m not saying all shows will present false data or will put wrong ideas in their head but there are some shows that are just not suitable for children. One of the shows aired on television that in my opinion is not proper for children is “Family Guy”, whose comedy is well known worldwide. I feel that the show demonstrates cruel comments about certain races as well as rough intakes on distinct events. Family Guy is not appropriate for children because it gives its own thoughts on political problems, the large amount of profanity will carry on with them, and the violence shown is devilish.

Why does television catch children’s attention? We all want to know the answer to this question. In Eleanor E. Maccoby’s article “Why Do Children Watch Television” gives us his thoughts “If it is interesting, it strikes a responsive chord in him—satisfies a particular need provides wanted information, or perhaps offers release from general stress” (Maccoby). Children usually ask a question when something isn’t clear to them… but when they learn something else they take it in especially when it’s persuasive. It is easy for a child to become a victim of false information and Family Guy has all the tools to smoothly get ideas into kid’s heads. Family Guy makes fun of almost every single race group and also political problems going on in the world today. Family Guy puts its own harmful comedy into our social problems and also puts its own thoughts to it which can affect the way children think. From own personal experiences when I was young I was indeed vulnerable and there are a lot of children like me or at least how I was. So that is why children need to be careful on what their learning as well as watching because a lot of what their watching may not always is true.

The show demonstrates profanity in almost every episode which is not appropriate for children. I know most mothers don’t want his son/daughter to be a “potty mouth”. Some parents are over protective on what their children watch and don’t want them to get bad thoughts on their head. Eleanor E. Maccoby’s article on “Television: Its Impact on School Children” demonstrates his study on how much children watch TV he says “ The people in the upper groups who have not bought TV, on the other hand, criticize the programs, are concerned about the effects of TV on family life and school work, and in general disapprove of TV”(Maccoby). In this generation televisions are everywhere and children cannot avoid them. Maccoby’s example shows that parents are scared on what effect TV will have with their school. Imagine your child thinks saying bad words is cool since his favorite TV show says it he wants to be just like them and starts insulting people at school, he will get in so much trouble. It is good to limit the time for television or it can become a habit to want to watch it every day.

Children should not be introduced to violence in such an early age. By getting violence in their heads they can enjoy it and think its okay and thereby committing something later in the future. Family Guy presents this in an episode “Baby Stewie and Brian discuss Stewie’s plans to torture his mother:

Stewie: “I’ll teach that hussy to go on a boat ride without me. When she returns I’m going to put bamboo splinters under all her fingernails. And I’m going to strip her down and tie her to the bed.”

Brian: “Okay.”

Stewie: “Then I’m going to make her crawl on her hands and knees while I drip hot candle wax all over her back.”

Brian: “And then what are you going to do?”

Stewie: “Let’s see…”

Brian: “Are you going to shower her off after all of that candle wax?”

Stewie: “No. I’m going to keep her filthy.”( Gildemeister)

Stewie is the evil child in the show and his thoughts are devilish. This example shows anger towards his mom Lois Griffin; he thinks of his mom like that what you think children will learn from that. Many children will think its okay to treat their mothers like that which I think is a scary thought. Imagine you have a little brother watching that show and come home and he has a plan like this because his mother didn’t buy him something. That is a scary thought. Family Guy should be shown to only adults and parents should not let their children see it.

The reason I think violence, profanity, and sexual jokes can wait for children is because children don’t take things seriously and children between the ages of 5-12 are very honest people. They might not like someone and they can treat them so bad once learning about violence or profanity as well and the innocent school mate will be most likely bullied by these young children. For sexual jokes they can wait because they don’t understand what’s going on or what they are even talking about you don’t want to put a child in that responsibility of making his own child his life is barely beginning has going to have a lot of time to be thinking about that. I wasn’t raced like that because shows like: Family Guy” weren’t with the same morals or values as my parents and they didn’t want me to learn anything bad. I say children can wait because they get more wisdom from the years and can comprehend the jokes while rite now they just laugh because they see other family members laughing but with time they will look back at t those episodes and be like “Oh now I know what they meant” and laugh.

Television can persuade children into new ideas thus affecting them. They also get affected by the vocabulary they are introduced to if thinking profanity is cool. Violence is never safe to teach to children especially if you know how compulsive children are. Children need to watch shows that are made for them not adult shows. They will have their time when their older and find more out of shows. Parents should pay more attention on what their children are watching so they can stop them from learning something that can wait.

Friend

Dear Gloria Morales,

I haven’t had the time to hang out with you since coming to Cal State Northridge. I hope you been good and studying what you love. We need to hang out to catch up with things we been doing. I wanted to tell you that I came across a book and was interested rite away. I was reading about Freud and Family Guy, once I saw the titles name and saw it had Sigmund Freud I had to read it. The book is called “They Say I Say”and the article is called “Family Guy and Freud: jokes and their relation to the unconscious” by Antonia Peacocke. The article is not long at all so you won’t be devastated on having to read ah whole book. I have to say the article was good well in my point of view. Once I read the section of the book I quickly thought about you since you want to be a psychologist yourself. It would be good practice by reading this article. Since we also took psychology in high school and learned about Freud I had to tell you about the section in this book.

The article talks about one of his theories which are the unconscious but makes you think of more while you’re analyzing what they say about the Family Guy show which makes you want to read more of it. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen the show if you haven’t seen the show you should take a look at it to understand what the book is saying about the show and how Freud relates to the article. I bet if you ask any of you family members they’ll go on and on of how amazingly hilarious the show is and they’ll probably make you watch it in an instant. The author also mentions its own thoughts about the show and her joy of watching the show.

I had a few questions about the article but if you read it we can discuss the theories we both came up with and we can talk about them. The article truly makes you question a lot of things about the show and why people keep on watching it. It changed my perspective about the show but I also learned things about the show like how the writers put their own thoughts on the cartoons. Especially the fact that I don’t get is why do people keep on watching it if it has rude comments throughout the whole show. I don’t how people don’t get offended by it or is it the comedy that covers that.

Well hopefully you read the article friend and enjoy it as much as I did. It has a lot of interesting things and facts you will learn about. If you do read the article tell me about it and your thoughts I really want to know. Can’t wait to hear from you friend take care and talk to you soon. I also hope you tell me about how your life is going and college.

Sincerely,

Ana Munoz

Antonia Peacocke

Dear Antonia Peacocke,

Hello my name is Ana Munoz and I have recently read your reading “Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious” on the book “They Say I Say”. I wanted to say I enjoyed reading the text because I can relate to who Sigmund Freud is. I took sociology and psychology in high school and I found the text interesting, just reading the title caught my attention. I agree when you said “Trusting in their viewer’s ability to analyze what they are watching, the creators of Family Guy point out weaknesses and defects of U.S society in a mocking and sometimes in tolerant way” (Peacocke305). I agree with this statement but am also a bit confused on how the show introduces these social problems on the world, would this affect how people think about the social problem? Or do they think it’s just a show? In my opinion I think the show can affect the viewer’s point of view especially if a child is watching the show in a very young age and doesn’t know much about politics. While others can just be entertained by the silliness of the show because they know it’s just for comedy ratings. That just got me a bit confused.

Another thing that got me a bit confused was when you said “Comparing the level of offense to that of Don Imus’s infamous comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team in the same year, comments that threw the popular CBS radio talk-show host off the air, Dubner said he wondered why Imus couldn’t get away with as much as Family Guy did”(Peacocke309). I agree with Dubner why can family guy get away with so many hurtful comments while Imus couldn’t and got fired after his little scene. I think it’s just the popularity of the show and how people take the comments is how the show has been kept for so long. You also said that the show has been got in trouble but had been asked to be on the show once it stopped being aired on TV. I was amazed at that comment and how people talk bad about the show yet so many people want the show back.

You also mentioned Freud I was waiting to hear about him more but you placed him all the way in the end I understand why you put him there but you also put more than one theory of Freud. I understand that you wanted to prove your point first and then add Freud to the conversation to think about the relationship. I expected more knowing Freud because he is a famous psychologist that can have variety of theories. One thing for me that Family Guy and Freud have in common is that they are both taken to be sexist. Freud is a well known psychologist but variety of people think that his theories are all about sex and it can relate to Family Guy as well because that’s how the show is taken to be about.

I hope you can help me with these questions about the text because I would really want to know your ideas about my comments and also would want to know your ideas on it as well. I also want to understand the text better that is why I am writing this letter. I really did enjoy your text hope to hear from you soon Antonia Peacocke.

                                                                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                                                                      Ana Munoz

Family Guy

Family Guy is well known for being the comedy show on Fox and its outstanding ratings. Many viewers are fans of the show while others are offended by the racist comments. A famous psychologist named Sigmund Freud theory on why people have different reactions is on how the person was raised, their beliefs, and ideas. Some people find the show interesting because the writers of the show often present their ideas on the script and I believe so too because that is the reason why so many people like the show because they think the same even though its  racist in a comedy but they think the same way that’s why the keep on watching the show. Freud does prove a point on how the show is and viewers but although the show is inappropriate people seem to enjoy and have the need to watch it again.

Mitt Romney

The clip demonstrated a brief summary of Mitt Romenys Acheivements so far. Some of his achievements were going to harvard, getting married, and becoming governer of Massachusets. The clip also showed us some of his failures by telling us of his mission to France. Throughout the video we saw his accomplishments getting better from having his college paid off to running for the presidency. Mitt Romeny didnt just want to stick with being governer of massachusets he wanted to take it to the next step and be well known for something else. The video also showed he was a republican and was fighting for his spot in the presidency.
