Final Essay #3 (Body Weight)

There has always been a typical image for how a woman, men, and even children appearance has to be. From how they dress to how their weight is supposed to be. People can usually find this in magazines, internet, and television. Appearance can be stressful to keep up with and even depressing. There are some blunt people out in the world that can make someone feel bad by judging their appearance and even how they speak. Some of the negative effects of perfect appearance are getting bullied, bulimic, and possible suicide.

Children can be extremely mean especially to their fellow classmates. They have no idea that what they are saying to their peers can really hurt them. It can hurt them physically as well as emotionally. A perfect example for this is actually a celebrity named Demi Lovato. . In the article Demi Lovato Interview: Teen Star Opens Up on Bulimia, Cutting Issues, tells the audience “I’ve spoken openly about being bullied throughout the past few years, but one thing that I’ve never been able to feel comfortable talking about was the effects that it had on my life, afterwards,” she said. “I literally didn’t know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, ‘Well, you’re fat.”(Johnston). She was just an innocent child and was just unfairly treated and a lot of kids go through the same situation. There are many innocent children getting bullied because of their weight when they are sweet children. Demi Lovato is a perfect role model for a lot of people out there because she understands what they are going through and helps them out.

When someone gets told their fat, it can really hurt them. Body image then begins to form a big part of their lives. According to J. Kevin Thompson “Body-image disturbance, generally consisting of a subjective unhappiness with some aspect of one’s appearance, is also extremely prevalent and may be associated with psychological distress (e.g., depression) and functional impairment (Thompson, Heinberg, Altabe, & TantleffDunn, 1999).”(Thompson181). The person whom is affected by the body image disturbance will be unhappy until she changes her body image. This can be a problem that can stay with the person affected for the rest of her life. Depression is one big outcome of self image and is difficult sickness to go through and a long process to overcome. Family is needed when going through depression to keep motivation going.

Girls tend to care more about their weight than men. Seeing skinny women getting attention may change the way an individual women looks at themselves. Some girls get so obsessed with their weight that in some situations can become an issue. Bulimia is a horrible eating disorder that is made through time. It is the guilt of eating which makes the person want to throw up the food right away because of the fear of gaining weight. This eating disorder can happen to anyone and as I mentioned the Disney channel star Demi Lovato has struggled with this issue from an early age. Janice Johnston stated on her news report that “Her family helped her find professional help for her food issues. But there was a secret battle she fought alone, something she desperately hid from everyone: At age 11, Lovato began cutting herself — intentionally self-mutilating her wrists as a way of coping with emotions.”(Johnston). Seeing people on television that are skinny and attract all the guys makes someone overweight feel unattractive and bad about themselves. Demi Lovato struggled with this issue and turned to bulimia. When dealing with this illness you are not on your own. People will notice, especially your family. Setting a certain image for people isn’t always a good thing because as Demi expressed it comes with other consequences.

The most dangerous effect of body weight issues is suicide. Suicide does come to peoples mind when they are fed up with their body image and can’t stand the pressure of wanting to be thin. There was actually a survey expressed on Body Image Issues and Teen Suicide article that stated “About 19 percent said they had considered suicide in the previous year and about 9 percent said they had attempted it.”(Press). Body image isn’t always about being overweight but also being under weight. The thought about having to hate yourself so much that you’re willing to end your life is a scary thing. To think that students from grade ninth through twelve actually said they thought about suicide or even attempted is unacceptable. I feel like television shouldn’t always show skinny girls because appearance doesn’t even matter its how you present yourself as a person. The significance of beauty is different to everyone but there are a lot of rude people out in the world that don’t think the same as a lot of people.

Media has a certain image for men and women. The Medias image of men is that they have to be buff and attractive. For women, they have to have a thin figure and stay young. Same goes for children. Everyone gets affected by these stereotypes and can be severely hurt by rude comments as well as illnesses. Bullying can hurt students especially if the children are with their classmates till they graduate high school. Bulimia is not an easy illness to come across because it is a long process to get your health back to normal. Suicide can be the worst of all because no one wants to lose their loved ones to pointless comments. People take in comments differently but the effects of them are all the same. Some people lead to one or the other but all come across one of these. They forever will carry these memories with them. Just because people can get help doesn’t mean they can forget about the mental abuse they have faced. Media should change the way they express actresses or idols.

Final Essay #2 (Poverty)

Ever since 2008, work in the United States has drastically gone down. This has affected a lot of people, mainly families. Racing up a family can have its challenges and one of the biggest is having to support them. Some people have up to 5 children which can be more to handle. Imagine how hard it can be to take care of your loved ones with this economy crisis. I love you and I miss you are not going to pay the bills rite. You have to have a job to make money for your family. Since the economy has gone down crime rates have gotten higher in California, children have been getting sick/diseases, and have had an increase number of families becoming homeless. These three things affect people’s families and people around them too.

Many know that people turn to crime when having trouble paying bills, lack of work, etc. Crime rates in America have gone up ever since 2008 and will keep on going up. People are in need and some turn to crime because it is the easiest way to fulfill their need. A really scary thing has recently happened to my cousin, his car got stolen a month ago and this happened right in front of his house. It is such a scary thing. This happening in my family made me think about how unemployment is affecting people in the California. Gilbert Geis, the writer of “Newspapers, Criminologists, and Crime Statistics.” Supports that “The FBI report focuses heavily on street crimes and attends peripherally to mundane white-collar offenses, despite the deluge of catastrophic economic violations, many of them criminal, that were highlighted during the Enron and Arthur Andersen debacle and onward through the subprime lending fraud and what became known as the Great Economic Meltdown.”(Geis1). Geis supports the idea of crime being a result of the lack of money. The “Great Economic Meltdown” is a great explanation of what is happening today. Crime is the biggest meltdown right now and can get worse if economy decreases as years pass. I don’t even want to think about what can happen in result to that.

Families that are having trouble finding a job may not have the same amount of food on the table as other families have. Kids need to eat because they are growing up and need every nutrient as well as water to not get sick. If this is not given to a child they do have a risk of getting sick and especially if they don’t have proper clothes for the seasons. On Ulla Beijer’s article Physical diseases among homeless people: Gender differences and comparisons with the general population she reports “Not having shelter also can be a risk for children as well as adults. There were a number of gender specific diagnoses, where risks were considerably elevated, such as diseases of the genital organs, viral hepatitis, and poisoning for homeless women, and cerebrovascular diseases, diseases of the liver, and concussion for homeless men”(Beijer). Having no job can affect these homeless men and women and can even be difficult to keep their health in good conditions. Not being able to pay for some medicine that can be necessary must be really hard too. Diseases such as hepatitis, poisoning, disease of liver etc. are serious health problems and need attention and if not noticed can become even more dangerous than before.

It is also very hard to find a good paying job and sometimes families are in debt because of credit cards or other expenses and don’t have enough to pay rent. What happens now? Yes, it’s sad to say but people lose their houses. My friend recently lost her house last week. It broke my heart seeing her family in the street. You can see the pain in their face while they looked for another house. Just knowing that they would have to sleep on the streets just gave me a bad feeling, especially since imp really close to her she’s like my sister. No one really pays attention to people on the streets that are homeless and don’t appreciate until it happens to them. Anderson and Koblinski acknowledge that “For years the most popular stereotype of the homeless in the United States was the bum on skid row, drinking wine from a brown paper bag or seeking handouts from passersby. However, during the last decade, the scarcity of affordable housing—-coupled with other social and economic changes—thrust many faces into the homeless population” (Anderson1). Anderson and Koblinski make a lot of sense with the stereotype although there are still some people like that there is also the same amount of families. It breaks my heart seeing them like that but I know they won’t give up and try their best to help out their family.

Some families are not born into poverty but go into poverty with decisions they make or experiences they have encountered. In the article Childhood Poverty, Chronic Stress, and Adult Working Memory Gary W Evans tells the audience “The longer the duration of childhood exposure to poverty, the worse achievement levels become.”(Evans1). Gary expresses the importance of child poverty and affects it can have for the future. Evans says that poverty has a big effect on children and their studies. Since the struggle is big children cannot concentrate on school. This can carry on with the child depending his/hers economy status. Some of the children can also have the urge to start working right away and quit school.

I don’t like seeing kids on the streets or people asking for money on the streets. It breaks my heart seeing homeless people with their children and pets asking for food especially when there are bad weather conditions. Some ways that we can help these unfortunate people are by making programs for them. There are many programs so people can stay off the streets. There are programs from singing to dancing to drawing, singing, etc. We can all donate money so these programs can keep on going. They make a better future for people that are interested in having a positive future.

Poverty has always been around but has caught our attention even more since the fall of 2008. There has been crime rises, from car stealing to breaking into people’s houses. I have also seen more homeless people being hospitalized and in urgent care. More people have also lost their home and are left homeless each year. The best way to help these families is by free marketing because some can’t work. Not all homeless people are alcoholics or drug addicts, they are just financially unstable. Hopefully there are more work opportunities in the future because it is really sad to see all these families going through such a tragic life.

Final Essay #1 (Family Guy)

Watching television may be an exciting matter for many people. In this generation people can spend most of their day watching television, especially children. Children’s vulnerability towards television will affect them in the long run by ideas presented in a negative way. I’m not saying all shows will present false data or will put wrong ideas in their head but there are some shows that are just not suitable for children. The main age groups that can be affected by bad television shows are between the ages of 5 through 12.  One of the shows aired on television that in my opinion is not proper for children is “Family Guy”, whose comedy is well known worldwide. I feel that the show demonstrates cruel comments about certain races as well as rough intakes on distinct events. Family Guy is not appropriate for children because it teaches children violence, introduces them to profanity and children start learning the meaning of sexual activities. Children have their own time period to learn about certain things. Sigmund Freud can help understand the concepts behind this.

Why does television catch children’s attention? We all want to know the answer to this question. In Eleanor E. Maccoby’s article “Why Do Children Watch Television” gives us his thoughts “If it is interesting, it strikes a responsive chord in him—satisfies a particular need provides wanted information, or perhaps offers release from general stress” (Maccoby). Children usually ask a question when something isn’t clear to them… but when they learn something else they take it in especially if it’s persuasive. It is easy for a child to become a victim of false information and Family Guy has all the tools to smoothly get ideas into kid’s heads. Family Guy makes fun of almost every single race group and also political problems going on in the world today. Family Guy puts its own harmful comedy into our social problems and also puts its own thoughts to it which can affect the way children think. From own personal experiences, when I was young I was indeed vulnerable and there are a lot of children like me or at least how I was. So that is why children need to be careful on what their learning as well as watching because a lot of what they watch may not always is true.

Children should not be introduced to violence in such an early age. By getting violence in their heads they can enjoy it and think its okay and thereby committing something later in the future. Family Guy presents this in an episode “Baby Stewie and Brian discuss Stewie’s plans to torture his mother:

Stewie: “I’ll teach that hussy to go on a boat ride without me. When she returns I’m going to put bamboo splinters under all her fingernails. And I’m going to strip her down and tie her to the bed.”

Brian: “Okay.”

Stewie: “Then I’m going to make her crawl on her hands and knees while I drip hot candle wax all over her back.”

Brian: “And then what are you going to do?”

Stewie: “Let’s see…”

Brian: “Are you going to shower her off after all of that candle wax?”

Stewie: “No. I’m going to keep her filthy.”( Gildemeister)

Stewie is the evil child in the show and his thoughts are devilish. This example shows anger towards his mom Lois Griffin; he thinks of his mom like that what you think children will learn from that. Many children will think its okay to treat their mothers like that which I think is a scary thought. Imagine you have a little brother watching that show and come home and he has a plan like this because his mother didn’t buy him something. That is a scary thought. Family Guy should be shown to only adults and parents should not let their children see it.

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychology, had his own thoughts and ideas of the development of humans. Freud came up with the Id, Ego, and Super Ego to explain how our mind works. The best way I can explain these three are by looking at it like in a movie when someone comes across a problem and they have the little devil (Id) on one side and the angel (ego) on the other and the main person who is going to make the decision (Super Ego). These concepts of the personality play in the psychosexual stages of development. There are five stages: oral, anal, phallic, latent, and genital. Each stage has its own age and is different from one another. The one I’m going to focus on is the latent stage which deals with ages 6 to 11 and Freud explains “During this stage, the superego continues to develop while the id’s energies are suppressed. Children develop social skills, values and relationships with peers and adults outside of the family.”(Freud). In this stage children are learning about them and are taming the Id but how can a child do that if they watch violent shows and are getting different ideas to be bad. This will have a serious effect on the relationships that are being built and relationships at home with the parents.

The show demonstrates profanity in almost every episode which is not appropriate for children. I know most mothers don’t want his son/daughter to be a “potty mouth”. Some parents are over protective on what their children watch and don’t want them to get bad thoughts on their head. Eleanor E. Maccoby’s article on “Television: Its Impact on School Children” demonstrates his study on how much children watch TV he says “ The people in the upper groups who have not bought TV, on the other hand, criticize the programs, are concerned about the effects of TV on family life and school work, and in general disapprove of TV”(Maccoby). In this generation televisions are everywhere and children cannot avoid them. Maccoby’s example shows that parents are scared on what effect TV will have with their school. Imagine your child thinks saying bad words is cool since his favorite TV show says it he wants to be just like them and starts insulting people at school, he will get in so much trouble. It is good to limit the time for television or it can become a habit to want to watch it every day.

Family Guy is well known for its language and comedy. It is also known that the characters are perverted and show sex craze. One of the main characters that are perverted is Glenn Quagmire. One of Quagmire saying was” Peter: [sees Quagmire leaving a prison cell] “Quagmire, what are you doing here?”

Quagmire: Oh, it’s conjugal visit day. You know I love doing a woman in the can. Oh! Giggity giggity giggity goo!

Announcer: Who else but Quagmire?

Singers: He’s Quagmire, Quagmire

You never really know what he’s gonna do next

He’s Quagmire, Quagmire

Quagmire: Giggity giggity giggity giggity, let’s have sex!”(Hotspot). Leading children to listen to this kind of non sense as such a young age can make a child grow up way too quick. The scariest thing about this is that they can start having sexual activities without knowing the consequences. Another thing is that they can even make one of their peers feel uncomfortable because they don’t have the same type of humor or knowledge.

The reason I think violence, profanity, and sexual jokes can wait for children is because children don’t take things seriously and children between the ages of 5-12 are very honest people. They might not like someone and they can treat them so bad once learning about violence or profanity as well and the innocent school mate will be most likely bullied by these young children. For sexual jokes they can wait because they don’t understand what’s going on or what they are even talking about you don’t want to put a child in that responsibility of making his own child his life is barely beginning has going to have a lot of time to be thinking about that. I wasn’t raced like that because shows like: Family Guy” weren’t with the same morals or values as my parents and they didn’t want me to learn anything bad. I say children can wait because they get more wisdom from the years and can comprehend the jokes while rite now they just laugh because they see other family members laughing but with time they will look back at t those episodes and be like “Oh now I know what they meant” and laugh.

Television can persuade children into new ideas thus affecting them. They also get affected by the vocabulary they are introduced to if thinking profanity is cool. Violence is never safe to teach to children especially if you know how compulsive children are. Children need to watch shows that are made for them not adult shows. They will have their time when their older and find more out of shows. Parents should pay more attention on what their children are watching so they can stop them from learning something that can wait.

Essay 3(Bullying)

Television Effect on People

Now days I see televisions everywhere I go like the store, hospitals, restaurants, etc. I have noticed that the media aim for women the most. Women tend to be more vulnerable when it comes to their age or looks. I know I care about my looks and what’s on style and I’m pretty sure I am not the only one out there. That is why it is easy to sell certain products to women. One of my main concerns of the effect of television on women is all the skinny girls that are on commercials. Women are expected to look like that and if they don’t look like that they are not considered pretty. This doesn’t just go for the girls it also goes for guys and children. Children are the ones that come out more affected by this issue because they don’t understand many things yet.  Some of the negative effects of television are bullying, anorexia, and possible suicide.

Activity #1(Stephen King )

Stephen King on Writing

Stephen king expresses his idea of what it means to be a writer. He goes into more details of how he sees writing and what actions can be taken by other people to become a better writer. King argues of what it means to be a writer and expresses himself clearly and effective. From the start he caught my attention by the way he organized his story. King claims “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”(king140). He caught my attention from all his evidence, especially because it was his own experiences. Stephen Kings writing was strong and was educational to me and probably other people seeking to become a writer because the examples he gives is not only for writing but can be used to choose a career as well.

King tells the reader “The real importance of reading is that it creates an ease and intimacy with the process of writing; one comes to the country of the writer with one’s papers and identification pretty much in order.”(King150). It tells the reader of the importance of the relationship between reading and writing. He gave us an idea of what a writer can get out of these two such as stress when letting all feelings out on a piece of paper. It made me realize that writing can be a big part in someone’s life because it can help someone get through a tough situation.

The writer is letting the audience know his thinking of writing and what it takes someone to become a writer. Stephen King says that by reading books you can find out and take in different styles of writing. Reading helps a writer become more versatile and better. Some of his claims are that people have to have ambition, learn from their previous writing, and take in new ideas. He expresses these ideas with personal information.

Ambition has an important role when writing because it just shows the love in a particular hobby or career. King had an example of his son wanting to learn how to play the sax but then said “I knew, not because Owen stopped practicing, but because he was practicing only during the periods Mr. Bowie had set for him: half an hour after school four days a week, plus an hour on the weekends.”(149).He expressed that his son was not showing for the musical instrument which meant that there was no interest. When learning from previous writings Stephen said “Almost everyone can remember losing his or her virginity, and most writers can remember the first book he/she put down thinking: I can do better than this. Hell, I am doing better than this!”(King146). This helped audience understand the dedication to put in and just make your next paper better because everything can be better. Just have to practice and think outside of the box. By taking new ideas in Stephen King also stated “Good writing, on the other hand, teaches the learning writer about style, graceful narration, plot development, the creation of believable characters, and truth-telling.”(King146). People just learn from previous writing that help a writer grow through time. Reading helps get people more imagination/creativity and also helps a writer express themselves in different ways.

Being stuck to a book all the time isn’t so healthy either. I agree that people do have to read but not all the time how King was letting the audience know. People can get inspired by other things not just books. I feel that books do help but they don’t put the work in as much as the person that’s writing does. People don’t have to be a writer to enjoy writing or be good at it either. One bad thing that can come out of reading books constantly is becoming addicted to them. Some people actually have this problem and may take them to an imaginary place that can make them more creative but is also not healthy. I would have probably just suggested to read but not over due because reading may become an issue.

The article was persuasive. It had strong claims followed by strong personal information from the author. The credibility was good because evidence was good and relatable to most people. It had a good hook, I personally like reading things I understand with no hard vocabulary and this article did justice. It was well written.

Essay 2(poverty)

Ana Munoz

Ever since 2008, work in the United States has drastically gone down. This has affected a lot of people, mainly families. Racing up a family can have its challenges and one of the biggest is supporting them. Some people have up to 5 children. Imagine with the economy crisis how hard it can be to care of your loved ones. I love you and I miss you is not going to pay the bills rite. You have to have a job to make money for your family. Since the economy has gone down crime rates have gone higher throughout the U.S, children have been getting sick/diseases, and have had an increase number of families becoming homeless. These are just a small part of the consequences of poverty in the U.S.

We all know that people turn to crime when having trouble paying bills, lack of work, etc. Crime rates in America have gone up ever since 2008 and will keep on going up. People are in need and some turn to crime because it is the easiest way to fufill their need. A really scary thing has recently happened to my cousin, his car got stolen a month ago and this happened rite infront of his house which is a really scary thing. This happening in my family made me think about how unemployment is affecting people in the U.S. Crime is the biggest meltdown rite now and can get worse if economy decreases as years pass.

Yes, its sad to say but people loose their houses. My friend recently lost her house last week. It broke my heart seeing her family in the street. You can see the pain in their face while they looked for another house. Just knowing that they would have to sleep on the streets just gave me a bad feeling, especially since im really close to her shes like my sister. However, during the last decade, the scarcity of affordable housing—-coupled with other social and economic changes—thrust many faces into the homeless population”(Anderson1). Anderson and Koblinski make a lot of sense with the stereotype although there is still some people like that there is also the same amount of families. It breaks my heart seeing them like that but I know they wont give up and try their best to help out their family.

Poverty has always been around but has caught our attention even more since the fall of 2008. We have seen crime rise, from car stealing to breaking into people’s houses. We have also seen more homeless people being hospitalized and in urgent care. More people have also lost their home and are left homeless each year. The best way to help these families is by free marketing because some cant work. Not all homeless people are alcoholics or drug addicts, they are just financially unstable. Hopefully there are more work opportunities in the future because it is really sad to see all these families going through such a tragic life.
